Rommel is a true herpetologist in his heart. For his undergraduate research at the Universidade Nacional da Amazônia Peruana (UNAP) Rommel studied population genetics and venom protein evolution of Peruvian Bothrops. For his Masters at the UFAM Biological Diversity program Rommel worked on the taxonomy and systematics of the species of the bufonid genus Amazophrynella. Rommel is continuing to work with Amazophrynella for his Ph.D. in the joint INPA/UFAM Genetics, Conservation and Evolutionary Biology program.
