Daniel is interested in understanding processes of diversification and speciation in the freshwater stingray family Potamotrygonidae. This family is the only supraspecific taxon within the Chondrichthyidae (sharks and rays) all of whose species occur exclusively in freshwaters. Daniels obtained his M.Sc. in the joint INPA/UFAM Genetics, Conservation and Evolutionary Biology program, and then went on to pursue his Ph.D. in the department of Genetics and Evolution at UFSCar. In 2008 Daniel was the winner of the best poster presentation in the area of Genetics, Evolution and Breeding of Animals at the annual meeting of the Brazilian Society of Genetics held in Salvador, BA. Since 2014 Daniel has been lecturing at Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS).
